What Is Geodata and What Is It Used For?
Geodata is short for geographic data. It refers to location-based information such as GPS-coordinates, geographic boundaries and satellite imagery. Geodata is commonly used in mapping and navigation, infrastructure development, disaster management, and transportation and logistics as well as many other areas.
Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites are used to determine the exact location of objects.
Remote sensing uses satellites, aircrafts, and drones to capture images and data about the earths surface.
Crowdsourcing relies on the contributions from volunteers world wide to collect and update data.
These are just some of the ways geodata is collected. The data is then processed, stored and analysed using geographical information systems (GIS).
There is a diverse range of geospatial data available, such as:
- GPS Coordinates
- Digital maps
- Agricultural and land management
- Satellite imagery
- Environmental data
- Public Health
GIS stands for Geographic Information System. GIS is a computer based system used to capture, store, manipulate, analyse, and visualise geospatial data. It helps users to understand and interpret geographical information.
